Two Charged With Mailing Drugs to Unalaska

Two people are facing felony charges for mailing heroin and methamphetamine to Unalaska.

Jesse Lee, 24, is accused of sending roughly $70,000 worth of drugs from Washington State to Unalaska this month. The destination was a post office box that's registered to Lee and 30-year-old Kyle Eby.

Their address has been monitored for suspicious activity since early October, says police chief Jamie Sunderland. He declined to give a reason for that -- or why postal officials flagged two parcels bound for Unalaska.

They contained 56 grams of meth and 40 grams of heroin, according to court documents.

"We were able to do what’s called a controlled delivery in cooperation with the Postal Inspector’s office," Sunderland says.

The inspectors placed an electronic tracking device in each package and released them to Eby's post office box. On Thursday, Eby allegedly picked them up and brought them back home -- to a shipping container on Overland Drive, near Northern Mechanical’s rock quarry.

"Once we confirmed the packages were opened, we kind of swooped in there -- some of the staff from Public Safety here, and later, some of the postal inspectors," Sunderland says.

Besides the drugs that were allegedly mailed in, police found nine firearms and more than 90 grams of meth among Eby's belongings.

Eby was solemn when he appeared in court Friday afternoon for an arraignment hearing. He faces six felony drug charges, plus three more felonies for possessing weapons in connection with a drug crime.

He also faces five misdemeanor counts for violating the terms of his release in a separate case.

Eby was arrested in July after he lost control of a company vehicle near Memorial Park. Eby was allegedly under the influence of marijuana when he crashed Northern Mechanical's pickup truck into the water.

Eby was still working for Northern Mechanical when he was arrested this week, according to police. Before Eby can be released from jail, he must pay a $50,000 cash bond and secure a court-approved guardian.

The other defendant, Jesse Lee, has been charged with two felonies for allegedly distributing drugs by mail. Unalaska police have requested a warrant for her arrest. Lee is currently living in Seattle, according to her Facebook profile.

So far, Lee and Eby have not been charged with any federal crimes.
