Aleutian Arts Council presents Spring Coffeehouse and Project Dumpway
Wednesday, April 15 2015
The Aleutian Arts Council held their Spring Coffeehouse in conjunction with their annual Project Dumpway event on April 11, 2015 at the Burma Road Chapel. Project Dumpway features local artworks and a fashion show of attire designed using recycled materials. This is board member and high school art teacher, Babbi Goodwin’s final year heading up Project Dumpway event and as always she delivered. There were 12 recycled fashion entries and 9 recycled sculpture entries. Co-designers Onya Enkhbat and Sheerabel Trinidad won the People’s Choice and Judges’ Choice awards for the fashion show. Mia McWilliam’s sculpture “When Pigs Fly” won People’s Choice award and Leah Bacalso’s “High Five” won the Judges’ Choice.
Coffeehouse is a musical event open to all musicians. In addition to scheduled acts, there were a few surprise impromptu performances from students and from Burke Mees who entertained the crowd with a rap about the life of an Alaskan pilot in a Lower 48 world! Coffeehouse also featured possibly one of the last performances of Our Band so the council, as well as the audience, were thrilled they were able to contribute a variety of different music to the event.
The Aleutian Arts Council typically holds a Fall and Spring Coffeehouse each year, incorporating the Project Dumpway event with the Spring Coffeehouse. AAC would like to thank the community, performers, participants and the City of Unalaska for their continued support!
