Library’s Summer Reading Program Wraps Up
Tuesday, August 18 2015
Summer Reading Programs are hosted at libraries across the country to keep kids reading over the summer, encourage reading for fun, and combat the “summer learning slide” that happens while school is out. This year, the Unalaska Public Library expanded our yearly elementary program to include preschoolers, teens, and adults, with the goal of encouraging the entire community to read over the summer.
Unalaska’s Summer Reading Program started June 1, with a kickoff party on June 5. The program ran through August 15, and a grand prize drawing was held at the Heart of the Aleutians Festival. The winner for the teen drawing is 7th grader Jayce Wiley who gets an iPad Mini. Megan Lane was drawn for the adult reviews and will get a Kindle Fire. The winner of the PCR staff summer reading competition was Maricela Rodriguez, who read 3,368 pages over the summer and will win 2,000 Alaska Airlines miles. Over the summer, the library received 83 teen book reviews and 56 adult book reviews for the final drawing.
Congratulations to our summer reading winners, and thank you to the reading superstars of all ages who participated! Many thanks to Friends of the Library for providing the awesome prizes this year. Teen and adult book reviews can be seen on display in the library through the end of August, and Preschool and Elementary children can still turn in their reading logs for prizes until August 31.
