5th Annual Bobby Johnson Summer Bay Classic participants (PCR Staff)

On a wet and gray August 5th afternoon, ten runners/walkers and four bikers gathered at the community center for the 5th annual Bobby Johnson Summer Bay Classic. Twenty six signed up to participate, but weather was probably a factor for the low turnout. Before the race began, PCR Coordinator Nick Cron revealed a slight change on this year’s half marathon race route. Historically, the race began at the Broadway Ave going south to the valley, up Overland Pass onto Summer Bay road and finally turning left on King Road, finishing just a few meters shy of Bayview. This year, organizers extended the finish line farther out to make it a true 13.1 track and ending closer to the Town Park, the location of the Music In the Park series, another event planned by the Department of Parks Culture and Recreation. As she crossed the finish line, veteran runner Holly Holman checked her GPS watch and noted that she had logged 13.11 miles of running. The awards ceremony was held at Town Park.

Liam Andersen crossed the finish line at 1.17.33, placing first over all and for the Teen Boy bike category. Amanda Andersen followed next at 1.24.18, putting her at first place for the Women’s bike category. Runner Tarek Wetzel finished at 1.46.14, bagging the first place for the Men’s run while Stephanie Joyce finished at 2.19.45 to place first for the Women’s. Teen Jeffrey Moore clocked in at 2.30.28 at the finish line to win first place for the Teen Boy run. For more results, check out the PCR’s Facebook page.
