Fathers & Daughters

PCR held its annual Father/Daughter Valentine’s Day Dance on the evening of Sunday, February 16th in the Community Center Gymnasium. Around 20-25 pairs of fathers and daughters attended, with the girls ranging in age from about 4 to 16. In addition to the dancing, the event organizers facilitated communication exercises like “get to know you” questionnaires encouraging parents and their children to learn more about each other’s lives, and then share them with the rest of the group. Recreation Coordinator Andrew Miller said the event was “not simply fathers dancing with their daughters. This was a chance for fathers to interact with their daughters in an incredibly meaningful way. Not only did they dance and take pictures with one another, but they shared private information and got to know one another more personally.”

A lot of the attendees seemed to be bonding in ways they didn’t normally push themselves to. As the night went on, there were also organized dances and activities like the cha-cha, limbo, and Macarena, keeping everyone in the gymnasium moving. A Mother/Son Swim took place at the pool across the street at the same time, providing another great opportunity for families to go out together and exercise. The event was organized by PCR Operations Manager Albert Burnham, and this was the second time the department has hosted it.
