Polar Bear Run Kicks Off 2015 Racing Season
Tuesday, March 03 2015
The 2015 Polar Bear Run took place on February 22nd and was the kick off to the 2015 racing season. The Polar Bear Run is a flat out and back, 5k (3.1 mile) course that starts on Summer Bay Road near Memorial Park in Unalaska. There were 44 racers, 4 dogs, and a polar bear that lined up at the starting mark. The weather was perfect with the sun shining and a few snow flurries. As the horn sounded for the start, runners and dogs took off but, the Polar Bear, also known as Polar Bear Clarence, stayed at the starting line to encourage the runners as they finished. The first runner through the finish line was Paola Nacionales with a time of 22:10 followed by Zachary Geurin and Chris O’Connor who rounded up the top 3 overall finishers. As for the female runners Mercedez Caudillo was the first across the finish line with a time of 24:00 followed by Melissa Good and Beatriz Deitrick.
The PCR encourages participants to run with their leashed dogs in all races! Staff would like to thank Amanda Greaves, Lynda Lybeck Robinson, Margo Peters, and Beatriz Dietrick for bringing their dogs and keeping them active. All dogs that stayed after the finish received treats from PCR Staff! The PCR would also like to thank Rodrigo Caudillo for creating the 2015 Polar Bear Run logo; Carl Landerholm who gave PCR access to the Methodist Church parsonage garage for registration; and all of the race volunteers.
The next PCR racing event is the 2-mile Summer Solstice Run that will take place on June 22nd. We hope to see you there!
