The seven-member Unalaska Swimming high school team traveled back to the Kenai Peninsula for swim meets held at the Soldotna High School Pool.

Nearly 100 girls and 100 boys from Colony, Homer, Kenai Central, Kodiak, Palmer, Seward, Soldotna, Unalaska, and Wasilla high schools participated in the annual Pentathlon September 25th. All swimmers competed in five individual events – 100 Yard Individual Medley, 50 Yard Butterfly, 50 Yard Backstroke, 50 Yard Breaststroke, and 50 Yard Freestyle.  Everyone’s time from each event was added for the final finishes. Unalaska boys finished 34th (Jonathan Le), 39th (Amiel Fernandez), and 62nd (Johnny Khongsuk). While the Unalaska girls finished 40th (Kiara Villamor), 44th (Amber Le), 48th (Delanney McConnell), and 56th (Marjamae Pili). The girls team from Colony, in Palmer, and the boys team from Kodiak took home first place awards.

On day-two, September 26th, Unalaska Swimming faced dominate swim programs from Colony, Kodiak, Palmer, and Soldotna in a standard high school swim meet. There are a total of 24 events including relay, individual, and diving.  In each event the top six finishes score points (Individual Events:  1st Place = 7 Points, 2nd Place = 5 Points, 3rd Place = 4 Points, etc. | Relay Events:  1st Place = 14 Points, 2nd Place = 10 Points, 3rd Place = 8 Points, etc.).  Each swimmer is allowed to swim in two out of eight individual events and two out of three relay events.  Additionally, each team can have no more than three individuals in each event for scoring purposes.  Delanney McConnell and Kiara Villamor placed 4th and 5th in the 100 Yard Butterfly. Kiara Villamor placed 6th in the 100 Yard Backstroke. And the Unalaska girl relay team (Kiara Villamor, Marjamae Pili, Amber Le, and Delanney McConnell) placed 6th in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay event. Other highlights from the meet were Amiel Fernandez, Johnny Khongsuk, Delanney McConnell, and Marjamae Pili getting their best personal times in both of their individual events.

Coach McGirt is pleased with how Unalaska athletes are going out and competing against larger schools with bigger and more established swim programs. "We have a smaller group this year but these students have been steady and consistent with their dedication to the sport of swimming and have a genuine desire to get better," he says.

Unalaska Swimming will be back in action this Friday, October 02nd, when the Buccaneers from Valdez come to town for a dual meet. The Valdez team is led by four returning swimmers that made States last season. This will be the last home meet and the end of the Jr. High swim season. The meet will start at 7:00 p.m. at the Unalaska Aquatics Center. Jr. High swimmers will compete against themselves in each event prior to the high school events. Unalaska swim teams are coached by D. Tyrell McGirt and Erin Reinders.
