The Unalaska Raiders volleyball team flew to Ninilchik on October 16, 2013 to compete in the 2013 Spikefest Tournament. Eight teams participated: CIA, Tok, Ninichlick’s varsity and junior varsity, Birchwood, Su-Valley varsity and junior varsity, and Unalaska. The team placed 2nd, losing to the defending champion Su Valley, 20-25 and 18-25 in the final match. Three Unalaska players made the All-tournament team: Taytum Robinson, Louisa Seman, and Cynthia Drayton. The other students who competed were Charity Haskins, Keylene Esnardo, Kiecel Tungul, Kanesia Price, Emerson Winters, and Marina Olson. The team also played in two conference matches bringing their season record to 2-0.

Julie Heard, the Unalaska Raiders' volleyball coach, felt that the team surprised their competition and the spectators with their performance. She said the team was challenged, played hard, and left the gym feeling like winners. Heard is proud of the team’s strong start for the season.

“As the new coach this year with lots of new players on the team, I was incredibly satisfied with how they played. We will continue to grow and work on our skills,” she said.

Unalaska will host Su-Valley on November 1st and 2nd.
