Runners Get Colorful for Breast Cancer Awareness
Wednesday, September 25 2013
This past Sunday, members of the community supported breast cancer awareness by participating in the first ever Unalaska 5K Powder Run. It was a perfect day for walking or running in the sunshine, and according to IFHS Executive Director Eileen Conlon Scott, about 177 individuals participated, including women, men, students, children in strollers and backpacks and an uncounted number of dogs. Students volunteered to throw color powder at the runners as they passed various stations along the way, resulting in a very colorful group by the end of the event.
Scott stated, "Next year we expect over 300 participants, starting at Kelty Field, with 7 powder stations along the way. Across the street from each powder station, we’d like to have local musicians performing. The turnaround would be at the high schoool and after the 5K everyone can tailgate at Kelty Field and enjoy the afternoon grilling out." She encourages everyone to "support breast cancer awareness and be a color runner!"
