On Sunday, May 11, the Unalaska High School auditorium rang with the music of 30 young musicians in the annual Spring Piano Recital. Students range in age from 5 to 16. Almost every seat was filled with family, friends, community members and dignitaries. Even the celebrity a cappella group Vox Machine came to support the piano students, to the thrill of several young fans.

The piano students of Lynda Lybeck Robinson performed a variety of upbeat, jazzy or classical selections, and each student, in addition to their solo piece, shared a duet piece which they had prepared with Ms Lynda, siblings or classmates. Audience reaction was livelier than ever, and the spirit of the performers appeared to be pretty high. Smiles were broad, a few high fives between kids after their successful playing or exciting duet presentation were witnessed.

A new addition this year was that of a trio performance with piano student Kiara Villamor on piano, Delanney McConnell on Horn, and Louie Tan on flute. They performed a piece composed by Jennifer Linn called Serendipity. All students, including guest performers, received a well earned congratulatory medal afterward, and three trophies were awarded for extraordinary achievement. Top honors went to “Composer of the Year” Caitlin Rowland, “Most Improved” Shane Morris, and “Most Inspirational” (Inspiring/involving others and self to set high musical goals and achieve them) Kiara Villamor. Recitals are held twice a year.

Winter recital is always the second Sunday in December, and Spring recital is always the day after prom/Sunday before graduation.
