Unalaska, AK – This week, members of the state redistricting board visited Unalaska for input on the drawing of District 37.

Board chair John Torgerson led the meeting, and he explained that the board aims to have 17,500 people in each legislative district. He adds that low population numbers in rural Alaska in last year's census means districts that will cover a wider portion of the state.

Unalaska, AK – Another case related to last year's drug bust has wrapped up.

Last week, Cory Merrifield, 22, was sentenced to five years in prison, with two and half suspended, along with three years probation for misconduct involving a controlled substance. He was also sentenced to 180 days, with 120 suspended, for violating the conditions of his release. All other charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Unalaska, AK – This weekend, 14 Unalaska students will travel to Anchorage for the 41st annual Native Youth Olympics. KUCB's Alexandra Gutierrez caught up with some of the participants.

Unalaska, AK – Last night, Unalaska experienced its third major motor vehicle accident in six weeks.

David Harrell, 23, was allegedly speeding on the way back from Summer Bay just after 10pm when the Isuzu Rodeo he was driving went off the road near Little Priest Rock. The car fell more than 10 feet and flipped, injuring Harrell and the two passengers with him.

While Harrell and one of the passengers needed to be ambulanced to the clinic for care, no one involved in the accident suffered any major injuries according to Sgt. Mike Holman.

Unalaska, AK – Yesterday evening, city council hashed out a number of issues related to the future of the ports and harbors department.

Ports director Alvin Osterback addressed the council for approximately an hour, and he discussed the status of the ports enterprise fund, best management practices for the Carl E. Moses small boat harbor, and the new harbor's plans for operations and oil spill response.

Unalaska, AK – The American President Lines crane is finally operative. A cargo vessel offloaded at the dock this afternoon.

The old APL crane went down during a storm in December of 2009. While the replacement crane arrived in August, it wasn't powered until April 1, according to APL spokesperson Mike Zampa. APL spent then spent this month testing the crane and awaiting certification.

Unalaska, AK – City council will be meeting to discuss the future operations of the Carl E. Moses small boat harbor.

The work session will open with discussion of the council's goals for the coming fiscal year, along with the status of the ports budget, which is expected to see a shortfall.

Council will then hear three presentations on the Carl E. Moses small boat harbor. The first concerns a resolution that would put into place best management practices for ports. This resolution will be considered later during the new business portion of the meeting. The second presentation will focus on the harbor's operation plan, and the third will look at its oil spill response plan.
