Unalaska, AK – The state of Alaska is currently in violation of federal regulations regarding commercial drivers' licenses. In some small, off-the-road system communities, drivers can legally drive commercial vehicles with a special exemption license that does not require a skills test. Unalaska is not and never was one of those communities because our traffic volume is too high. However, the state has not enforced the federal laws and has allowed drivers in Unalaska and other towns, such as Nome, Bethel, and Dillingham, to drive without taking the required skills test. Now the state is developing a plan to make sure all communities are in compliance.

Unalaska, AK – The National Transportation and Safety Board recommends that the Federal Communications Commission require all commercial vessels to carry emergency position-indicating radio beacons that transmit vessel specific position data that can be read by all satellites. Though vessels are required to carry EPRIBs, the EPIRBs are not required to be equipped with GPS tracking equipment that tells all types of satellites exactly where the boat is located. An EPIRB only includes position data that can be read by low earth-orbiting (LEO) satellites, which travel from pole to pole at an altitude of 600 miles and will pass over a given location only every 50 to 75 minutes.

Nome Democratic Representative Neal Foster tried to amend the budget to include the necessary $614,000 when it was still under review by the Finance Committee on Monday, but they voted against the amendment 7 to 3. The failed amendment does not put the entire program into jeopardy, however it does mean that the offices in Unalaska, Dillingham, Kodiak, Nome, Petersberg, and Cordova will have to continue seeking grants to fund their agents.
