City continues slow-moving PCB lawsuit

Friday, January 29 2010

Unalaska, AK – The city is still pursuing the slow process of suing the federal government for PCB clean-up costs. Last year the city filed a civil suit against the military in an attempt to get $4 million dollars for cleaning up PCBs at the powerhouse site. The city argues that the PCB contamination was from electric transformers brought in by the military during World War II, and the federal government should pay the clean up costs. The military disagrees.

Cab company closing after legal charges

Friday, January 29 2010

Unalaska, AK – Local taxi cab driver Sheila Taranto's chauffeurs license was revoked after she pled guilty to violating city and state laws. Her taxi company, Mr. Kab, will no longer be in business starting on Feb. 1. Taranto pled guilty to one count of theft in the second degree for over charging customers. Excess charges ranged from 60 cents to $144 and totaled $601.10.

Taranto said that she did not intentionally do anything wrong; they were simply book keeping errors made when managing more than 100 different accounts. She called the charges and the investigation "disgusting" and said she only pled guilty because she could not afford to continue fighting the case.

New boat harbor design in final stages

Thursday, January 28 2010

Unalaska, AK – The designers of the new small boat harbor are in the final stages of public comment collection and design. The designers and the construction team, PND engineers and Pacific Pile and Marine, presented the current design modifications to city council Tuesday evening. Pacific Pile & Marine's Jason Davis said they are only making minor changes.

"The project is still very similar to our original design. The fundamentals of the floats have stayed the same but where we have made some changes is in the finishes, where the community really interacts. We've found the need for more space in the office and some specific requirements of different vessels on the floats."

Council talks money

Thursday, January 28 2010

Director of Public Works Nancy Peterson wanted the council to know about the increase before the project goes up for bid this week. Though the council did not make a binding decision, they showed support for the expansion even with its expanding budget.
