Unalaska, AK – The Department of Public Safety staged an active shooter drill at city hall on Friday to train police officers and emergency responders. KUCB was at the scene.

New research shows how Steller Sea Lions die

Unalaska, AK – A group of scientists developed a new device that can tell how, when, and where a Steller Sea Lion died. Preliminary data from five sea lions in Prince William Sound shows they were killed by predators. KUCB's Anne Hillman spoke with the principal investigator.

Numerous capital improvement projects underway at city

Unalaska, AK – This week's city council meeting included a rundown of the city's current capital improvement projects by public works director Nancy Peterson. Some of the highlights include a new energy saving system for the school. For about $300,000 the school is installing a direct digital control system for the air handling and environmental system that will help keep the school at a consistent temperature and save money.
Ninety tons of old nets shipped out for recycling

Unalaska, AK – The city recently shipped 180,000 pounds, or 90 tons, of old fishing nets off the island for recycling. Working with the company Korea Express USA, the city paid to ship the nets to Seattle where the company will sort them and pay to send them to Korea to make new products.
"Recycling is a good thing in this case and it's working out well for us. It works out to be about $181 a ton shipping it out," Public Utilities Director Dan Winters said. That's cheaper than shipping out the junk cars.
City discusses new plan for $6.2 million water treatment plant upgrade

Unalaska, AK – City Council members heard a presentation on the new water treatment addition proposals at Tuesday night's meeting. A new Environmental Protection Agency regulation requires all unfiltered water treatment plants that draw from surface waters, like the Pyramid Valley Reservoir, to use two different water treatment methods. Currently the Unalaska water department only uses chlorine. Public Utilities Director Dan Winters said the new system will add UV light treatment.

Earthquakes rock region; no damage done

Unalaska, AK – The Fox Islands group, home to Unalaska and Nikolski, has been rocked by about 80 earthquakes since last night. A magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook the region around 9:37 pm Monday and set off a long series of much smaller aftershocks, many with unknown strengths. Then, another large one magnitude 6.3 struck Tuesday at 12:21 pm. Alaska Earthquake Information Center seismologist Natasha Rupert said two large, closely timed earthquakes happen sometimes and since both events were similar in magnitude, seismologists call it a "doublet".
