Unalaska, AK – Sockeye salmon escapement into McLees Lake from Reese Bay, or Wislow, is up to 9,245 fish. That's almost 600 fish more than last year's total but still well below escapements from 2001 to 2007. U.S. Fish and Wildlife life will continue counting at the weir until escapement numbers are less than about 92 fish per day for 3 consecutive days. Last year they stopped counting on July 20th. The area, other than the mouth, are still open to fishing.
Unalaska, AK – Unalaska resident Bobby Johnson died on Saturday from a bicycle accident when racing in the Fireweed 400, a four-hundred mile race in south central Alaska. According to an Alaska State Trooper report, at about 11 am on Saturday Johnson was cycling downhill from the Eureka Summit on the Glenn Highway when he "fell over the front of the bicycle for no apparent reason." He slid under the guard rail where his head struck the steel guardrail post. He was wearing a lightweight bicycle helmet but he still suffered a severe head injury. He was immediately attended to by three physicians, a nurse, a paramedic, and an EMT at the scene of the accident. He was medevacked to Anchorage where he died around 5 pm.
Unalaska, AK – The House of Representatives is considering a change in fishing vessel safety regulations. Coast Guard fishing vessel safety inspector Charlie Medlicott spoke with KUCB's Anne Hillman about the potential changes and what's already being done in the Bering Sea to keep the fleet safe.
Unalaska, AK – Sailors like adventures, but some want adventures with a greater purpose. Another sailboat passed through Unalaska recently to attempt the Northwest Passage. This time, the crew of the 40-foot sailboat wants to educate people about climate change in the Arctic. KUCB's Anne Hillman spoke with the skipper.
Unalaska, AK – The fishing vessel F/V Trident was heavily fined by NOAA for falsely reporting where they fished on five trips during 2006 and 2007. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's enforcement office in Alaska was alerted that some vessels might be fishing in closed areas closer to shore. Upon comparing the log books on the Trident with the plotters on the ship's navigation equipment, officers noticed that they didn't match up. On the different trips, the boat was fishing closer to Akutan, Sand Point, and Unalaska than they reported.
Unalaska, AK – The Coast Guard has officially suspended its search for the man who fell overboard from the Alaska Warrior on Monday. Around 12:45 pm Monday, a 58-year-old Japanese man fell off the back of the Alaska Warrior as it fished pacific perch in Amukta Pass about 218 miles southwest of Unalaska. Witnesses said he was not wearing survival gear or a floatation device. Crews from the 192-foot Alaska Warrior and her sister ship the 218-foot Alaska Juris began searching for the crewmember immediately. Two Coast Guard aircraft - an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and a HC-130 Hercules arrived at the scene around 7 pm and helped with the search through out the evening. They continued searching the next day but did not find him. The Alaska Warrior reported finding his rain gear but not the man.
Unalaska, AK – The Wislow area, near Reese Bay, is now re-opened to subsistence salmon fishing, except for the area 500 yards or fewer from the outlet stream into McLee's Lake. On July 2 escapement into the lake jumped from 808 sockeye salmon to 5,560. By July 5, the number was up to 7,489. Alaska Department of Fish & Game area biologist Aaron Poetter explained that the sudden jump could have been caused by the heavy rain fall and weather change.
Unalaska, AK – The Coast Guard is searching for a man who reportedly fell overboard from the F/V Alaska Warrior as it passed through Amukta Pass today, about 218 miles west of Unalaska. The 58-year-old Japanese man fell overboard around 12:45 pm today with no survival gear on. Two Coast Guard aircraft are expected on the scene this evening and crews on the Alaska Warrior and her sister ship the Alaska Juris are actively searching for the crewmember. Reported weather conditions are 23 mph winds and eight foot seas. Both vessels are part of the Fishing Company of Alaska fleet and are homeported in Seattle but frequently fish out of Unalaska. The search is on-going. On Saturday a man fell off of the catcher-processor Rebecca Irene and the unsuccessful search was called off early Sunday.
