Unalaska, AK – After a one-year stalemate, the City of Unalaska and the union representing its employees have finally agreed on a contract.
The Unalaska City Council will decide at tonight's meeting whether to ratify the agreement with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 302, which represents employees at City Hall and in the Public Works, Utilities and Parks Culture & Recreation Departments. At their meeting last week, local union members voted to approve the contract, which includes one significant concession to the city. Local 302 negotiator Carl Gamble declined to comment on the deal today.
Reese Bay, AK – Since 2001, biologists have counted the number of sockeye salmon escaping through a weir at Reese Bay into McLees Lake. Usually, hundreds of fish have passed through the metal structure by this time, but not this year. KIAL's Anne Hillman went to the weir to check it out.

Unalaska, AK – Two crew members were rescued by the Coast Guard after a fishing boat sank off the Alaska Peninsula last night.
The fishing vessel Andromeda was reported missing somewhere between Port Moller and False Pass at 9:30 p.m. The Coast Guard cutter Mellon was in the area at the time, with a helicopter on board.
"The helicopter was able to locate two men on the shore in survival suits," said Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Levi Read.

Unalaska, AK – Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board investigators may wrap up their investigation into the sinking of the fishing trawler Alaska Ranger as early as Friday. The Marine Board of Investigation is hearing testimony this week in Boston, after which the board members will begin writing their report on the Easter morning disaster. Unalaska, AK – Two years after winning a historic upset in the House District 37 Democratic primary, Rep. Bryce Edgmon is looking ahead to his first reelection campaign this fall.
Edgmon will once again face Republican Ron Bowers in the general election.
"I decided, after talking to a lot of folks for several months, to throw my hat in the ring," Bowers told radio station KDLG in Dillingham.
Unalaska, AK – Aleutian regional organizations, legislative staffers and fuel providers will be meeting in Anchorage tomorrow to discuss how to put an end to the kind of fuel crises that have wracked villages in the region in the past two years.
District 37 Rep. Bryce Edgmon said he'd like to hear ideas on how to avoid a repeat of the situation this past winter in Nikolski, which ordered a fuel barge delivery for the early winter and received it just last week.
