Good news for local halibut fishermen at IPHC

Unalaska, AK – Last week, the International Pacific Halibut Commission held its annual meeting in Portland, Oregon, and for the first time Unalaska's local halibut fishermen were represented there.

Pete Hendrickson recently returned from the meeting, which he had attended on behalf of the Unalaska Native Fisherman Association. He said the unexpected decision by the commission last year to reduce Unalaska's region's quota by 13 percent was a wake-up call.


Gusting winds thwart Nikolski fuel delivery

Unalaska, AK – High winds scuttled another attempt to alleviate the fuel shortage in Nikolski and damaged a piece of heavy equipment there on Friday.

The Magone Marine Service vessel Redeemer was supposed to deliver 26,000 gallons of heating oil and diesel fuel to the village on Friday, but owner Dan Magone said the Redeemer was able to offload only about a tenth of its cargo before 75 mph winds drove the ship back from the beach. The harbor at Nikolski isn't a proper harbor with mooring facilities, so at the time the Redeemer was tied up to the village's loader, which was pulled into the sea when the gust hit the boat.

Unalaska, AK – The Aleutian village of Nikolski has been hovering on the edge of a fuel crisis for months. For the second year in a row, the shipment of fuel that Delta Western Fuels was supposed to deliver in the early fall didn't arrive. Local authorities are now spending huge sums of money to get a few barrels of heating oil at a time delivered on planes and fishing boats. One such shipment was scheduled to arrive Thursday afternoon, but the village's problems aren't over yet. In Unalaska, KIAL's Charles Homans reports.


Crane, loaders needed to pull garbage truck out of ditch

Unalaska, AK – It took a crane and two front-end loaders to rescue a garbage truck that slid off an icy road this morning.

Work crews from West Construction and Pacific Stevedoring were contracted to deal with the truck, which belongs to Williwaw Services, the company that services dumpsters in Unalaska. Chris Riley, Williwaw's onsite manager, said that one of his drivers was trying to get up the narrow, icy driveway leading from Dutton Road up to the Alaska Commercial Co. apartments when it happened.


Coast Guard medevacs girl from St. Paul

Unalaska, AK – A 10-year-old girl was flown from St. Paul Island to Anchorage by the Coast Guard for emergency medical treatment last night after a Guardian Flight plane from Unalaska had to turn back because of the weather.

According to staff at the clinic in St. Paul, where she had been previously treated, the girl was in stable condition in Anchorage as of this afternoon. Neither her name nor the nature of the medical emergency have been released.


Kodiak man gets brief jail sentence in truck theft

Unalaska, AK – A Kodiak man is serving a brief jail sentence after stealing a truck in Unalaska in September.

Kalen Little, 21, pled no contest to first degree vehicle theft in Unalaska's District Court, and was sentenced to 100 days in the Kodiak Jail with 90 days' credit for time served, plus three years' probation and a $1,000 fine with $750 suspended. Little, who was underage at the time of the theft, was also charged with minor operating a vehicle after consuming alcohol and minor in possession of alcohol, both of which were dismissed.

Unalaska, AK – A minor influenza outbreak is underway in Unalaska, and the Iliuliuk Health Clinic is advising people to take extra precautions to stay healthy.

Clinic Administrator Sonia Handforth-Kome said she has received six confirmed cases of the flu so far, three of them today. This particular strain is characterized by body temperatures over 101.5 degrees, sore throat and the usual array of headaches and body aches.


Fake $100 bill shows up at Eagle

Unalaska, AK – The Public Safety Department is suggesting people keep an eye out for counterfeit money after someone passed off a fake $100 bill at the Eagle store on Friday.

The bill turned up in the till when the store's staff was counting money at the end of the night. Sgt. Jennifer Shockley said that Public Safety has no idea where it came from or who spent it at the store, but that it wasn't exactly a master forgery.
