Unalaska, AK – The state Division of Elections has questioned four employers in Unalaska following a complaint alleging that they were trying to influence their employees to vote for Carl Moses.
Division director Whitney Brewster faxed a letter to representatives of Alyeska Seafoods, Offshore Systems Inc., UniSea Inc. and Westward Seafoods last night. One of the letters viewed by KIAL states that the division "received a report that management staff of your plant have been providing sample ballots to plant employees, on-site at the plant, and instructing the employees to write-in the name of a particular candidate and vote for that candidate at the upcoming general election."

Unalaska, AK – Two major scientific foundations are joining forces to look at the shifting dynamics in the Bering Sea ecosystem.
New research initiatives by the National Science Foundation and the North Pacific Research Board will focus on the eastern Bering Sea shelf, north of the Aleutian Islands. The research will take a big-picture approach to the region's ecosystem, from tiny plankton to fish to the human communities that depend on them.
Unalaska, AK – The first eastern area Bering Sea tanner crab season in a decade hasn't been a promising one so far.
The first deliveries in the fishery, which opened on October 15, have been full of what's known as old shell crab, according to the Alaska Department of Fish & Game. Although the department doesn't have hard numbers yet, area management biologist Forrest Bowers says that more than half of the crabs in some deliveries have been old shell.
Unalaska, AK – A fuel shipment reached the village of Nikolski on Sunday, and the community has restored electricity and phone service after a week without either.
Tribal administrator Tanya Kyle said that the eight barrels of fuel that were flown in on Thursday were enough to take care of the village's basic needs until the barge from Delta Western Fuels arrived on Sunday with about 46,000 gallons onboard. That's enough to supply the village for about a year.
Unalaska, AK – The jack-o'-lantern is a staple of Halloween decoration in most of the United States. But many kids growing up in the remote villages of the Aleutian Islands and the Alaska Peninsula had never seen one in the flesh until eight years ago. That was when the crew of the ferry Tustumena began using its final trip of the year, in early October, to bring Halloween cheer to the villages between Kodiak and Dutch Harbor.
Unalaska, AK – A month after Bryce Edgmon defeated Carl Moses in the House District 37 Democratic primary race, another election in the Aleutian Islands ended in a coin toss Friday. But this one was even stranger, because the winning candidate died four weeks ago. KIAL's Charles Homans has the story.
Unalaska, AK – Cleveland Volcano erupted briefly on Saturday afternoon, spitting out a small cloud of ash. The event lasted about 15 to 20 minutes, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory.
The cloud was reported by a pilot. AVO volcanologist David Schneider said that the eruption was similar to other recent activity at Cleveland.
"This event seems quite typical to what's been seen there over the last year or two, where there's these very short-duration explosions producing an ash cloud," Schneider said.
Nikolski, AK – A gale heading towards Nikolski is expected to keep fuel barges away from the village until early next week. But the local tribal administrator says a smaller air shipment that arrived today should be enough to keep essential services operating until the rest of the fuel arrives. KIAL's Charles Homans reports from Nikolski.
