Coast Guard Medevacs Unalaska MSD Staffer

A member of the Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment in Unalaska was medevacked to Anchorage Monday in critical condition.
The Coast Guard helicopter from the cutter Alex Haley took the MSD staffer to Cold Bay early Monday morning. There, the man was transferred to a commercial medevac and flown to Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage. Emergency room staff confirmed he arrived around 11 a.m. and is currently being treated.

The Coast Guard and Unalaska police are investigating a fatal accident that took place aboard a 376-foot factory trawler this week.
Police chief Jamie Sunderland says crew members on the Alaska Ocean were doing some repair jobs at about 9 p.m. on Tuesday night.
"It looks like an acetylene tank was leaking inside of a cabinet, which was ignited by some nearby welding," says Sunderland.
Coast Guard Suspends Search for Missing Mariner

The Coast Guard has called off its search for a fisherman who fell overboard from his vessel in the Bering Sea Wednesday.
The Coast Guard isn’t releasing the man’s name, but friends, family and local news reports say he is Eric Eder. Eder was fishing aboard the F/V Seeker. The Coast Guard says it’s an 87-foot trawler based in Newport, Oregon.
Eder fell from the Seeker Wednesday morning, 10 miles northwest of Unimak Island. Another vessel in the area, the F/V Seafreeze Alaska, alerted the Coast Guard.
Coast Guard Assists in Two Medevacs From King Cove

A Coast Guard helicopter crew spent Tuesday morning performing back-to-back medevacs between King Cove and the community of Cold Bay.
A fisherman from the crabber Miss Courtney Kim got hurt on Monday night when a crab pot fell on him, inflicting multiple injuries. The vessel was near Sanak Island -- not far from King Cove, which has a health clinic.
The vessel headed into town, while the Coast Guard made arrangements for an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew to leave its forward-deployment in Cold Bay and meet the fisherman the next morning.

The Coast Guard is searching for a mariner who fell overboard from a fishing vessel near Unimak Island Wednesday morning.
The man fell from the F/V Seeker, 10 miles northwest of Unimak Island, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer Grant DeVuyst.
The Seeker is a 98-foot trawler out of Newport, Oregon.
DeVuyst says the Coast Guard was alerted to the incident by another good Samaritan vessel.
Council Changes Up Budgets for Capital Projects

City council moved to shift more than $4 million in funds from the water treatment facility project to the powerhouse project at their meeting last night.
The change would come after council accepts a loan from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation.
It’s part of a budget amendment that got a first reading last night.
Herron Asks Legislature to Support Izembek Road Campaign

Alaska's legislature is still searching for ways to connect King Cove and Cold Bay by building a road through a federal wildlife refuge.
Their latest effort is a joint resolution introduced by Aleutians representative Bob Herron. The six-page resolution urges Interior Secretary Sally Jewell to reconsider a land swap plan she turned down in December.
Wharfage Fees Could Drop at Carl E. Moses Harbor

Vessels at the Carl E. Moses Small Boat Harbor might see a big drop in the charge for on- and off-loading cargo at the harbor’s drive-down float if city council approves changes to the fee schedule.
An ordinance amending the fees is up for a first reading at tonight’s council meeting.
Ports Director Peggy McLaughlin says in her memo to council that the current wharfage fees are unreasonably high for how the drive-down float is being used.
Driver Faces Charges After "Drifting" Into Pond

A man is facing charges after an accident late Friday night sent his truck into the water near Unalaska lake.
No one was injured in the accident, but Deputy Police Chief Mike Holman says the driver is charged with reckless driving and driving without a license.
Holman says that driver, 21-year-old Brendan Muese, was returning home from the store shortly after 11 p.m. Friday when the accident happened. Muese was alone in his vehicle. He had allegedly been drinking, but Holman says he wasn’t legally considered intoxicated.
