Chum Bycatch Tops 100,000 Fish

Pollock B season is winding down quickly, with just a handful of vessels still out fishing. Almost all of the quotas has been taken -- but so have more than 116,000 chum salmon, as bycatch. That’s almost seven times as much as last year.
Karl Haflinger is president of Sea State, the organization that analyzes bycatch data. He says a lot of the chum bycatch came early on, as the fishery got underway in June.

Five Arrested in Undercover Drug Sting

Five people are facing felony drug charges after being arrested Tuesday.
Unalaska police say they’ve been conducting an undercover investigation for the past four months, which allegedly revealed sales of black tar heroin and crystal meth in town.
Beginning around noon Tuesday, police arrested Michael Hindman, 24, Jana Lekanoff, 25, Daylen Luff, 29, Eric Roach, 45, and Zane Zueger, 25. Roach was arrested for allegedly selling meth, and the others are accused of selling heroin, or possessing it with the intent to sell.

Council Sketches Out Ideas for Harbor Overhaul

City council has gotten a preview of what the Bobby Storrs small boat harbor might look like after an extensive renovation.
The ports department hired PND Engineering to do scoping work on the renovation project in January. Last night, PND’s engineer, Dick Somerville, called in to present council with some options for overhauling the facility.
All five councilors present said they wanted to see the floats reconfigured, to maximize moorage space. (Councilor Zoya Johnson was excused from the meeting.)

Kennicott Ferry Delayed Due to High Winds

Passengers on the Kennicott ferry will spend the night in Unalaska. The vessel’s captain ordered a delay because of a storm expected later this evening. The National Weather Service is forecasting winds up to 65 knots with five-foot seas.
Captain John F. Falvey is the General Manager of the Alaska Marine Highway System. He says the last leg of the ferry’s trip into Unalaska was bad enough.
