Unalaska, AK – The fuel crisis in Adak continues. The city, which is debt for over $525,000 to the fuel supplier, Aleut Enterprises, has been rationing fuel for over a week and is down to the last few hundred gallons. City manager Steve Hines did not return any phone calls but a city council meeting has been planned for tomorrow.
The new power schedule, starting tomorrow, reduces power availability from 11 hours a day to seven.
School superintendent Joe Beckford says the teachers have set a schedule to teach from the school when power is on in the morning then from generator powered teacher housing in the afternoon. They will do outdoor activities when possible.
As the town discusses the fuel problem, Adak Fisheries representative Dave Fraser says he is planning on using his personal funds to buy one thousand gallons of fuel for the city. That should last about four days, or until the next scheduled plane arrives. Fraser also says he is setting up small generators to power the houses for plant workers.
Some of the city's money problems have been blamed on Adak Fisheries' debts to the city. Fraser says the city re-examined the electrical meters and new numbers show that Adak Fisheries only owes the city around $90,000, not the originally state $250,000. The city did not confirm this information.
