Alaska Airlines Will Keep Flying to Adak

Adak will keep its jet service for another year. The federal Department of Transportation awarded Alaska Airlines a $1.6 million contract on Tuesday to continue flying to the community as part of the Essential Air Service program.
Alaska Airlines was the lowest bidder and the only one to offer combined cargo and passenger service. The community and local businesses strongly endorsed the company’s proposal. Offshore Systems Inc wrote in a letter to the DOT that as they prepare a marine support services base in Adak, “reliable, consistent and proven air service… is critical to [the] venture’s success.”
Alaska Airlines will fly to Adak twice a week using a Boeing 737 Combi plane.

Hooray! I was stationed on Adak as a ROIC Construction Inspector for the Navy from 1992-1993. It was a wonderful place, and it's great to hear that they are continuing jet service. I hope to get back there soon and catch some more salmon!

Yay! Having Alaska Airlines service was a significant factor in our decision to buy a vacation home on Adak last year. It's surprising to me how many people who served in the military on Adak love it and would like to see it again but don't seem to be aware of the fact that it has good air service. There are some Facebook pages and web sites where people share their stories about Adak; Alaska Airlines needs to reach out to those people using those.

Alaska Air and Reeves Aleutian have done a great job keeping Adak connected with the "world". Glad to see that the air service is still going.
