Alleged Vandal Arrested in Separate Assault Case

Monday, May 07 2012

A Washington man accused of vandalizing the Russian Orthodox Church was arrested this weekend over an unrelated assault.

Christopher Hadsell, 23, faces a slew of charges related crimes committed Unalaska over the past two years. His troubles began in 2010, when he was working as a deckhand on the F/V Caitlin Ann and allegedly tried cashing a voided check for $3,488 from the boat’s account. Hadsell moved to Washington shortly after the incident, but returned to Unalaska this March to “make things right” and face the felony theft charge, as he wrote in a note to the court.

On April 22, Hadsell allegedly participated in a cross-town graffiti spree. The Department of Public Safety positively identified Hadsell last week, and in an interview with police he admitted to spray-painting hearts on the archway leading to the Church of the Holy Ascension’s cemetery. Hadsell added that he drew hearts for his girlfriend on the Kloosterboer cold storage facility and Highliner property. He said that he did not act alone, but could not identify his accomplice by name. Police are still investigating the matter and are actively seeking help from the community in identifying the second vandal.

Most recently, Hadsell was arrested on May 6, for allegedly assaulting a bouncer at the Harborview Bar and Grill. According to Sgt. Bill Simms, Hadsell had been at the bar for Cinco de Mayo, but was kicked out after allegedly picking fights with other patrons. Hadsell then tried to get back into the bar, but was turned away by staff and a police officer. He then came back to the bar again, and this time allegedly punched bouncer Greg Allen and broke his prescription glasses in the process.

According to Simms, Hadsell has been forthcoming in police interviews and has apologized for his actions.

“It’s just a classic case of bad decisions,” says Simms.

In total, Hadsell faces two felony and six misdemeanor charges. According to court documents, he has pleaded not guilty to the vandalism and assault charges. He’s yet to offer a plea in the theft case. Hadsell remains in police custody, and bail has been set at $5,000. His next court date is scheduled for May 10.
