Alyeska winding down pollock season

Unalaska, AK – Alyeska is winding down their pollock A' season. Their fleet went out earlier than other boats this year. The Unisea fleet waited until mid-February to start fishing, but Alyeska's fleet was on the grounds by late January. Though fishing was slow in the first week or so, Alyeska general manager Sinclair Wilt said that fishing early was a good decision.
"The roe matured much sooner than last year, so it was wise to get in early. And fortunately the weather was very good in February and that was good to be able to fish in good weather. In became more difficult in the last couple weeks when the weather turned very cold and nasty."
He said the roe market was poor this year, but catching the pollock before the roe matured meant that the flesh quality was higher and worth more.
The company is 97.5 percent through with their co-op fish quota and is awaiting a few more loads before fully closing down for the season.
