APL fire caused by minor hot work

Tuesday, January 26 2010
Unalaska, AK – The Unalaska Fire department reports that Friday evening's fire at the APL dock started when some minor hot work for the crane dismantling caught a small amount of foam insulation on fire. The fire spread rapidly along the highly flammable foam and created large amounts of smoke. However, it was quickly extinguished and no one was injured. The fire only damaged the crane, which was already being demolished.
The fire fighters used a defensive fire attack that used a handline and an aerial water stream from a fire truck. Personnel from the United States Coast Guard arrive on scene to make sure none of the water flowed into the ocean or other water ways and polluted them.
It was the second fire last week. On Wednesday, a large structure fire badly damaged Peking Restaurant and the surrounding building units.
