AYP scores good for Unalaska

Unalaska, AK – Unalaska School District officials are awaiting the release of the state's official adequate yearly progress numbers for the 2005-2006 school year.
AYP, a component of the federal No Child Left Behind program, charts learning comprehension for students in 3rd through 10th grade. The statewide report will be released on Friday, but for now, preliminary numbers indicate that Unalaska did quite well. Eighty-nine percent of the district's students are proficient in reading, writing and language arts, up from 85 in '04-'05. Seventy-eight percent are proficient in math, down from 81 percent the previous year.
Superintendent Darrell Sanborn cautioned against reading too much into these small changes, be they positive or negative, because of the small sample size of the student body. The district has about 390 enrolled students.
One solid trend in the district's performance, however, is a consistent improvement in Alaskan Native students' scores, which have been climbing for the past three years.
