Basketball tournament day two update

Thursday, March 04 2010

Unalaska, AK – The morning started off with a boys game between Kotzebue and Hooper Bay. Kotzebue won 45 to 28. Hooper Bay is now out of the tournament and Kotzebue will face Bethel tomorrow at 11:30 am.

Next, the Unalaska girls faced Hooper Bay. The game was literally neck and neck. The teams were tied at the half, tied at the end of the third quarter. But as the end of the fourth drew near, the Hooper Bay Lady Warriors drew ahead. First it was four ahead. Then, with 25 seconds left in the game they pulled ahead by 6 points. Luckily, Chelsea Carvia went to the line for two free throws and sunk them both. The Raiders kept pushing to close the gap and though they sank one more basket, in the last four seconds they couldn't get the ball back to tie it up and go into overtime. They lost 55 to 53.

With that loss, the Lady Raiders are out of the tournament. It was their strongest, highest scoring game of the entire season. Unofficial scoring shows Chelsea Carvia with 35 of the team's 53 points. What a way to end your senior year. The Hooper Bay Lady Warriors will go on to play the Dillingham Lady Wolverines tomorrow at 10 am.

Then at 1 pm the Bethel Boys challenged Nome but didn't stand much of a chance against the fearsome Nanooks. Nome plowed through Bethel and won 82 to 49. Bethel will face Kotzebue tomorrow at 11:30 am. Nome will challenge the winner of this evening's Unalaska-Barrow game.

At 2:30, the final game of the first session, the Dillingham Lady Wolverines played their first game of the tournament against Bethel's Lady Warriors. Dillingham was smacked out of the running for first with a 10 point loss to Bethel. Bethel won 39 to 29. This is Bethel's second win of the tournament.
