Blizzard Causes Numerous Traffic Accidents

Thursday, March 07 2013

Update 03/08:

The storm that passed through Unalaska this week caused a number of minor traffic accidents, but no injuries, and no other damage, according to police sergeant Jennifer Shockley. The most visible accident was an APL tractor-trailer that went off the road yesterday evening around 5pm. Shockley says the truck did have chains on, but that it appeared to have slipped off the roadway anyways. The driver wasn’t injured, and the truck was operable after a crane lifted it out of the ditch.

Original story:

Blizzard conditions have sent at least half a dozen vehicles off the road in the last day and half. The latest appears to a tractor-trailer on Captain’s Bay Road. The incident happened just before 5pm Thursday. The truck was tipped on its side in a ditch, but wasn’t impeding the flow of traffic. No one at Public Safety was immediately available to comment on the incident, or on how the truck would be removed. Road conditions are poor, with blowing snow impairing visibility. The city has issued a category II travel advisory, and is asking vehicles to stay off the road unless absolutely necessary.

The storm is expected to continue through tonight, with steady winds of 55 mph, and gusts up to 70 mph.

The school and all Parks, Culture and Recreation facilities closed early today due to the weather conditions.

Although I do not have a child, by the time I heard it was to be let out early-around noon, it was already bad, and it was not dismissed until around 2pm. If I did have a child, they would not have gone today. Education is important but safety of students and teachers should be placed first. It will take a death I fear for the school to let out here in horrible weather. I have seen it in other towns and it will happen here one day. It was white out conditions where I was at 2 which is when your child was being dismissed. I am glad your child is safe as I am sure you are as well....but the school did not 'properly maintain safety'. Everywhere else I have lived in my life, calls school cancelled for the day when the weather is forecasted to be this bad...sometimes it doesn't happen and that is to bad, but at least the kids are safe. Take DC schools this week. They closed for the blizzard, it didn't happen, yet right west of them it did. They took a chance to protect their students and teachers. I for one would appreciate that as a parent versus having my child dismissed into a white out.

Actually the school canceled school before the blizzard hit. If you recall this morning the weather wasn't that bad. I have a child in school and appreciate as much education as they can provide and maintain safety. The school did exactly what they should have. It worked out well.

I will never understand why the school knowing a blizzard was coming didn't cancel classes today instead of making the kids come home in the middle of white out conditions. It was already very bad by the time they were dismissed. It was a mess out there today. Be careful everyone.
