Unalaska, AK – The National Weather Service has a blizzard warning in effect until 7 p.m. this evening for Unalaska, where snow, low visibility and winds gusting up to 54 miles per hour have socked in flights and closed city offices and schools this afternoon.
Road conditions are also worsening, rendering much of General's Hill inaccessible by road and prompting the Unalaska Department of Public Safety to issue a Category 2 travel advisory, advising residents to drive only if necessary.
All of Pen Air's flights into and out of Unalaska were cancelled today, and the airline has added three additional flights out tomorrow if conditions improve. City offices sent home most employees at 2 p.m., and school buses picked up kids from all grades at 2:45. The Parks, Culture & Recreation Center has cancelled all programs for today, including the Valentine dance and soccer practice, and will be reopening tomorrow at 8 a.m.
Snow and rain are expected to continue through Monday.
