Boat aground off of Akutan

Unalaska, AK – A 58-foot fishing boat has run aground on Akutan Island, about 40 miles east of Unalaska. The four-man crew of the Icy Mist was fishing for cod when they sent out a mayday call at 4:38 this morning.
"Due to the remoteness of Akutan Island the mayday call was received by the Arctic Fox which was then relayed to Northern Glacier who contacted us," said Coast Guard Petty Officer Jon-Paul Rios.
The call said the ship was taking on water. The Coast Guard immediately deployed an HH-65 Helicopter from Dutch Harbor but the area was experiencing 70 to 100 mile per hour winds and 15 foot swells.
"That was the first that was on scene however due to the hurricane force winds it had to return to base because it was unable to hoist them safely," Rios said.
At 9:30 am, two HH-60 helicopters from St. Paul were on the scene and were trying to hoist the four men from the ship. Conditions in the area had not improved. The Coast Guard Cutter Munroe was also diverted to Akutan. The vessel has run aground and is in danger of breaking up. The Icy Mist is homeported in Kodiak and is owned by Bob Gunderson.
