Boats prepare for king crab season opening

Unalaska, AK – Tomorrow, the Bristol Bay Red King Crab and St. Matthew Blue King Crab fisheries open up at noon tomorrow. As of this afternoon 59 vessels have registered for red king crab this season, and five have registered for blue king crab.

This year, quota for Bristol Bay red king crab has gone down some - the total allowable catch is 14.8 million pounds. But that shouldn't affect the boats too much, says Sean Monahan, a deckhand on the Silver Dolphin.

"It's not going to put as much crab on the market with lower quotas, but the great price is wonderful for fishermen like use who do this for a living," he says. "You actually catch less and make more, which makes the job a little easier. The good price is a win-win for everybody."

Dockside prices this year could be upward of $5. In the 2008-2009 season, they were just a bit under 5. Deckhand Cheston Clark says they could be fetching more than that.

"I've heard some prices even higher than that - up to $6. And we've seen it in the past, too, where the prices have skyrocketed like that," says Clark. "And then it turns around and drops again. Quotas go up, prices go down. Quota go down, prices go up - it's been that way since the beginning of time."
