Bryce Edgmon beats Moses, Bowers

Wednesday, November 08 2006
Unalaska, AK – Democrat Bryce Edgmon appears to have won the race for House District 37, defeating Republican Ron Bowers and incumbent Representative Carl Moses's write-in campaign.
With the two largest precincts in District 37, Unalaska and Dillingham, reporting this morning, Edgmon is far ahead of his competitors with 910 votes. 306 write-in votes have been cast, most of them presumably for Moses, and Bowers has 320 votes. While many smaller precincts have yet to report, it seems unlikely that they will change the outcome of the election.
In the state Senate, incumbent Senator Lyman Hoffman defeated Republican challenger Norman Ayagalria 968-440.
In statewide races, District 37 voted far to the left of the state as a whole. In the gubernatorial election, voters in Unalaska and Dillingham overwhelmingly supported former Governor and Democratic candidate Tony Knowles over Republican winner Sarah Palin 899-533. Incumbent U.S. Representative Don Young beat Democratic challenger Diane Benson in the district by just 92 votes, 792-700.
Both Ballot Measure No. 1, which would have shortened the legislative session to 90 days, and Ballot Measure No. 2, which would have approved a tax on stranded gas reserves in the state, failed in District 37. No. 1 passed statewide, while No. 2 failed.
