Unalaska, AK – A surge in criminal activity kept the Unalaska Department of Public Safety busy this past weekend. Officers made 11 arrests between Friday and Sunday nights, and at one point had nine of the 12 beds in the city jail full. Sgt. Matt Betzen said the activity was a considerable increase over an average weekend in Unalaska, when three to five arrests are made.
"It was a busy weekend--it kept the officers hopping," Betzen said.
Officers made arrests in five assault cases and a half-dozen other incidents.
Among them was a vehicle theft on Friday night. Kevin Bacheldor, 28, of Windham, Maine, was arrested for allegedly stealing a pickup truck that was parked in front of the UniSea Sports Bar. The vehicle's owner spotted his truck being driven around town on Saturday morning and called Public Safety. Bacheldor was arrested, and charged with vehicle theft, driving with a suspended license, driving while intoxicated and possession of marijuana. Damage to the truck, which was being driven with a flat tire, was estimated at $700.
Officers also arrested George Torres, 40, on Saturday after an undercover officer allegedly bought a gram of methamphetamine from him for $200. Torres told officers he had gotten the drugs from a fisherman.
