Campbell tapped as ADFG commissioner

Unalaska, AK – Governor Sean Parnell has tapped Acting Commissioner Cora Campbell to lead the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
Campbell has long been seen as a favorite for the position, having served both Governor Parnell and former Governor Sarah Palin as a fisheries policy advisor. Prior to joining the governor's office, Campbell was the executive director of the Petersburg Vessel Owners Association.
At age 31, Campbell would be the second youngest Cabinet-level appointee in Alaska's history. Though Campbell has faced some criticism due to her age, she has also received support from commercial fishing groups like the United Fishermen of Alaska.
The other candidate for the position was Ron Somerville, who had previously served as chair of the Board of Game. Only two applications for the position were submitted, and the joint board of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game recommended both applicants as qualified for the position.
The state legislature must now approve Campbell's appointment to the position. She will continue to serve as acting commissioner in the interim.
