City Council address questions on personnel issues

Unalaska, AK – Last night city council met for a brief meeting, and moved forward on one item of business.
The council voted on the hiring of Catherine Hazen as deputy city clerk. The measure was approved 4 to 1. The council first took up the issue in June, but there were concerns regarding the consistency with current salary standards. If an employee has worked for the city for an extended period of time, his or her starting salary could be greater than the recommended salary for a management position. Zac Shasteen raised points about the fairness of the current system, while Dennis Robinson brought up the professional and financial advantages of hiring within the community. Yesterday, the measure ultimately passed 4-1.
Initially, the council was also initially to consider a resolution on the consent agenda that would confirm the appointment of a new member to the Iliuliuk Family and Health Services Board of Directors but that was scrapped due to a conflict of interest.
The meeting wrapped up in an executive session for their annual evaluation of the city manager.
