City Council meets tonight to discuss PCBs, landfill rates

Tuesday, February 13 2007

Unalaska, AK – The Unalaska City Council will convene this evening at City Hall for its regular meeting.

The meeting will offer the second of two opportunities for public comment on the city's brownfield cleanup plan for its new powerhouse construction. The land that would be used for the proposed expansion of the city's powerhouse is contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs. There is concern that once construction begins, soil erosion could lead to the PCBs contaminating Iliuliuk Bay if the material isn't properly contained.

Under the city's preferred alternative for the plan, which is partially funded by an Environmental Protection Agency grant, the contaminated soil from the site would be removed before construction and taken to the city landfill. There it would be placed in a new cell and capped.

Tonight's meeting will also include a public hearing on the city's adjusted landfill rates and the power cost factor for the city's electric rates.

The council session will be preceded by an informal town hall meeting with City Manager Chris Hladick to discuss the state of roads in Unalaska. That meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the council chambers, and will be followed by the regular council meeting at 7.
