City Council to authorize inquiry into election allegations

Tuesday, October 09 2007
Unalaska, AK – The Unalaska City Council will open an investigation this evening in response to questions raised about last week's city office elections.
On Monday, council candidate Randall Baker filed a formal objection to the election results, arguing via his lawyer that "substantial numbers of non-residents were allowed and perhaps encouraged to vote" on October 2. Baker said in an interview yesterday that he was referring specifically to the employees of the processing plants in Unalaska, many of whom registered to vote.
City Clerk Debra Mack, who is also the city's top elections official, said that the procedure at this point is that the City Council is expected to postpone the certification of the elections at tonight's meeting. The council will then pass a motion in accordance with city code directing the city's clerk, attorney and manager to investigate Baker's allegations, an inquiry Mack said would happen as quickly and openly as possible.
The City Council meets tonight at 7 p.m. in its chambers in City Hall.
