City Council to set budget priorities

Tuesday, January 25 2011

Unalaska, AK – Tonight, city council will be meeting to hammer out priorities for the coming year's budget.

The meeting will open with a work session where council will discuss financial goals for Fiscal Year 2012. A top objective is budgeting the general fund without a deficit, and maintaining city personnel at current numbers. According to a memo from City Manager Chris Hladick, the most complicated part of setting the budget will be determining the financing and timing of capital project involving the landfill, the water treatment plant, and the waste water treatment plant.

Council will then consider a number of items of new business. Council will give a first reading to an ordinance that would amend the city code to reduce the number of available taxicab permits to 19. They will also consider a resolution that would approve the goals for the Fiscal Year 2012 budget set forth in the work session. Next, they will discuss a lobbying trip to Juneau, scheduled to take place from March 27th to April 1st while the legislature is still in session.

Council will then wrap up in executive session to discuss the mediated settlement with the Department of Defense over the PCB contamination at the powerhouse site and the subsequent clean-up that occurred. Council will close the meeting with a resolution that would accept that settlement.

The meeting is scheduled for 7pm in the City Hall council chambers, and it is expected to last one hour.
