City Paving Projects Underway in Unalaska

Construction season is in full swing on Unalaska and Amaknak Islands.  Public Works Director Tom Cohenour expects this year’s summer road work to go a lot faster in comparison to previous years. He expects most of the work to take place this month and in July.

“The roads we’re looking at include the Coast Guard dock is one of the big ones.  They’ll be doing salmon way.  That’s from the Gas and Go all the way to Sea Lion drive," said Cohenour. "They’ll be doing King Street and West Broadway from Alyeska up to the four way stop and then East Broadway from about Alpha Welding all the way out to Holly Lane.”

Cohenour said work on King Street, which runs between Unalaska High School and Tutikoff Park, is likely the largest effort. It involves storm drainage work as well as complete paving.

“All the other roads will be just mill and overlay," he explained. "So that will make it a quicker project. They’re not really excavating deep into the ground and putting curb and gutter in.  It’s just there will be a machine that comes in, mills up existing asphalt and putting new pavement down.”

Crews will also chip seal Airport Beach Road.

“They’ll put down a tacifier," said Cohenour. "It’s kind of real sticky asphaltic substance and then they put pea gravel on top of that.  That will just help preserve the new pavement that was put down a couple years ago.”

The city has contracted with Knik construction to complete the road work. The total project costs is $4.7 million dollars. An additional million dollars will go toward inspections, testing and field engineering.
