Cleveland Steams Up

Friday, August 19 2011

Mount Cleveland is still bubbling.

For nearly a month now, the Aleutian volcano has shown persistent thermal anomalies. According to a status report by the Alaska Volcano Observatory, a scientist saw a small amount of steam coming from the volcano this week. Previously, reports stated that a lava dome was growing inside the volcano’s crater. So far, the eruption has not produced any ash clouds or lava flows.

But otherwise, data is sparse. AVO doesn’t have any seismic monitoring equipment on the volcano, and their satellite views have been blocked by clouds this week. Without more information, it’s a challenge for them to determine what exactly the volcano is doing.

Cleveland is located about 115 miles from Unalaska, and lies directly beneath a major flight path.
