Cleveland Volcano spews ash

Monday, October 30 2006

Unalaska, AK – Cleveland Volcano erupted briefly on Saturday afternoon, spitting out a small cloud of ash. The event lasted about 15 to 20 minutes, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

The cloud was reported by a pilot. AVO volcanologist David Schneider said that the eruption was similar to other recent activity at Cleveland.

"This event seems quite typical to what's been seen there over the last year or two, where there's these very short-duration explosions producing an ash cloud," Schneider said.

The last significant event at Cleveland was in 2001, when several eruptions spewed ash as high as 40,000 feet and lava that reached the ocean, forming a small delta at the base of the volcano.

Cleveland Volcano is located on Chuginadak Island, one of the Islands of the Four Mountains in the Aleutian chain.
