Unalaska, AK – The Coast Guard has officially suspended its search for the man who fell overboard from the Alaska Warrior on Monday. Around 12:45 pm Monday, a 58-year-old Japanese man fell off the back of the Alaska Warrior as it fished pacific perch in Amukta Pass about 218 miles southwest of Unalaska. Witnesses said he was not wearing survival gear or a floatation device. Crews from the 192-foot Alaska Warrior and her sister ship the 218-foot Alaska Juris began searching for the crewmember immediately. Two Coast Guard aircraft - an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and a HC-130 Hercules arrived at the scene around 7 pm and helped with the search through out the evening. They continued searching the next day but did not find him. The Alaska Warrior reported finding his rain gear but not the man.
The Coast Guard officially suspended the search Tuesday at 4:37 pm. The Coast Guard's combined search effort included four aircraft covering more than 1,400 square miles for 11 hours. The Alaska Warrior's crew and its sister ship, the Alaska Juris, searched for 28 hours. Both the Juris and the Warrior are part of the Fishing Company of Alaska fleet and are homeported in Seattle but frequently fish out of Unalaska. This is the second marine casualty in three days. A man fell overboard from the Rebecca Irene on Saturday.
