Community Center expansion now complete

Unalaska, AK – The community celebrated the grand re-opening of the PCR community center this weekend. People toured the new 8,000 square foot addition, which includes expanded cardio and weight training workout rooms, and a music room with two sound proof booths and space for small recitals and choirs. Local teen Michelle Fernandez spoke about the new space during the opening ceremony.
"I actually almost cried at the sight. I grew up playing in the small piano room for eight years and now this practice room is similar to those at the university. I think the expanded facility will bring the community closer together as there is more space, opportunity, and availability for everyone."
PCR advisory committee teen representative Teressa Henning said the new addition will benefit the community's youth. The staff has "been such a helpful and positive influence on me and on the kids who come and go."
PCR Director Jeff Hawley said the expansion came in at budget and ahead of schedule. Lakeview Construction, the company that built the expansion, is still finishing a few small projects in the teen room and will come back in the spring to paint the exterior and work on landscaping.
Hawley said so far he's only had positive reactions, especially for the cardio and weight rooms. "They're bright, they're light. The equipment's good in it. There's some new TVs in there for people to use and see while they workout. It just gives a lot more friendlier atmosphere."
They will not increase PCR fees this year, Hawley said, and do not plan on future increases either. They will not add any staff, but have installed a new camera system to monitor activities throughout the building. Energy upgrades should also help keep costs similar to previous years.
