Community discuss clinic expansion, improvement

Wednesday, September 08 2010

Unalaska, AK – On Friday, members of the community gathered to give feedback on the services provided by Iliuliuk Clinic. About 20 people met at Burma Road Chapel to listen to a presentation delivered by two representatives from Agnew Beck Consulting and then offer their own opinions on how the clinic could improve and expand. Heidi Wailand and Thea Agnew Bemben presented the results of the community health needs assessment and then opened the floor to Unalaska residents.

Among the first points registered concerned the lack of on-island obstetric care during the last month of a woman's pregnancy.

There were also multiple requests for the addition of a pharmacy whether it be publicly manned by the clinic, or privately operated. There were also questions as to whether the clinic could be expanded into a hospital down the road. Wailand suggested this would be challenging since a greater rate of population growth would be necessary to justify one.

Other suggestions for improvement concerned language fluency of staff and privacy within the clinic.
