The race has begun for a seat on Unalaska’s city council.

Yudelka Leclere has filed to run against incumbent Dennis Robinson for council seat B.

It’s the first time someone's officially challenged a sitting councilor in three years. But for now, it's the only contested race set for this fall. 

Zoya Johnson is running unopposed to keep city council seat E. When Leclere first filed her paperwork this week, she'd planned to run against Johnson. But she changed her mind just before Friday's deadline, according to city clerk Cat Hazen.

Three school board members -- that’s Cathy Jordan, Fernando Barrera and Denise Rankin -- are running unopposed to keep their seats, too.

City clerk Cat Hazen says she hopes having some competition this year might drive up voter turnout.

"Sometimes voters are not particularly motivated to come in if all the seats are uncontested," she says.

That was the case in 2012, when only about 100 people voted. In 2013, there was a write-in campaign for one council seat. That brought about 400 voters to the polls.

The last time there were multiple candidates for every open council seat was five years ago.

This year’s local election is Oct. 7.
