Council approves ports tariff ordinance

Wednesday, June 09 2010

Unalaska, AK – The city council met last night to discuss another increase to the Ports tariff and to move forward on the disposal of twelve trailers.

The council voted to amend the Port tariff. Last year a study by Northern Economics recommended that the council raise the tariffs by 4.8 percent per year for the next three years in order to help keep the department afloat.

Ports lost significant amounts of business to the new Kloosterboor facility last year, though it gained some back after the APL crane fell forcing them to use city facilities. In November, the council voted to increase the tariffs for just one year instead of the recommended three. The four members of the council present approved the ordinance unanimously.

The council also followed up on the question of where to move the 12 trailers on Loop Road. The trailers need to be moved to build the new grant-funded 8-plex city housing unit. At the last council meeting, an OSI representative told council members that they want to buy the 20-year-old trailers. Last night, the council scheduled a public comment hearing for June 29.

As the council may not have quorum until July, the hearing maybe pushed into the next regularly scheduled meeting.

The council also decided to withhold funding for the Convention and Visitor's bureau until the CVB completes a forensic audit of its finances and presents a financial plan for its organization. The CVB is currently without an executive director and is doing the intensive audit to get their finances back in order. The CVB applied for $164 thousand dollars in grant funding from the city.
