Council Considers Changes to Truck Regulations

Tuesday, May 22 2012

An attempt to minimize damage to Unalaska’s paved roadways might mean some changes for truck drivers. At Tuesday's meeting, City Council will consider a proposal that would limit the use of tire chains on semis and modify regulations covering the truck’s attachment point or 'fifth wheel.'

If the ordinance passes, truckers would only be able to use chains on days when the Director of Public Safety or the Roads Chief deem them necessary. They would also be required to keep the truck’s fifth wheel in the 'down' position, to make sure the trailer’s load is evenly distributed across the axles.

City Council will also take up several resolutions related to ongoing major projects. One of those would allocate $6.5 million for construction of the leachate flow-leveling tank at the landfill. Another authorizes the relocation of utilities in association with the airport expansion project. Council will also hear a presentation on financing options for major projects, including the wastewater treatment plant construction, landfill expansion and water treatment upgrade.

Also on the agenda is a public hearing and second vote on a rezoning ordinance that generated considerable discussion at the last Council meeting. The ordinance would reclassify a section of tidelands in Captain’s Bay from subsistence to developable, which would allow for further industrial build-up in the area. Council voted 6-0 in favor of the change at the last meeting.

Tonight’s meeting starts early - 6pm in City Council chambers.
