Council Considers Cost of Living Increase

Tuesday, September 11 2012

City Council will discuss a pay increase for some city employees tonight. The proposal would boost Title III employees' wages by 3 percent to cover increased cost of living. Council last adjusted for cost of living in 2009. Since then, it’s estimated to have increased by more than 8 percent. Thirty-four full-time employees and 16 part-time employees would benefit from the adjustment. City staff couldn’t immediately comment on how much the increase would cost.

Council will also review a proposed $1.4 million blasting contract. The blasting is necessary to clear space for the city’s new wastewater treatment plant. If awarded the contact, Anchorage-based Advanced Blasting Services will remove 90 feet of hillside behind the existing wastewater treatment plant by February.

Two ordinances dealing with changes to the city code will be up for second hearing. The first would modify existing tidelands regulations to increase the standard lease from 20 to 30 years. The second would cut minimum lot sizes for residential use. An ordinance appropriating money for a new city website is also up for second reading.

Council will finish the meeting with a vote on mayor and council travel to the Alaska Municipal League Conference and the annual Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference Board Meeting.

The meeting starts at 7pm in City Council chambers.
