Council Preview: Harbor Rates, New Council Member, 8-plex Rent

Tuesday, October 25 2011

Council meeting tonight will open with the swearing in of new Council member Zoya Johnson and the re-swearing of incumbent Dennis Robinson.

The main items of business for the rest of the meeting are setting rental rates for the City’s new 8-plex and a fee schedule for the Carl E. Moses Small Boat Harbor.

The City’s newly constructed housing unit opens to residents on December 1st. Council will set rental rates and policies for the eight apartments, four of which are reserved for teachers and two for public safety personnel.  The proposed rental rates are $1,300 per month for the 2-bedroom units and $1,600 for the 3-bedroom units.

Council will also consider changing moorage rates at the Carl E. Moses Small Boat Harbor.  Proposed changes include increasing the annual rate for both permanent and transient moorage by 15% and discounting rates for customers who pre-pay.  Other changes clarify how many vessels can use a single permanent slip.   Some organizations have said they would like to reserve permanent slips in the new harbor for rotating use by multiple boats.  That issue is not addressed in the current rate schedule.

In other new business Council has to decide whether to appropriate $823,000 in funds for repair of the Unalaska Marine Center.

Council will hold an executive session at the end of the meeting to hear updates on the ongoing wastewater case against the city and to conduct an evaluation of the city manager.

The public meeting is expected to last one and a half hours.
