Council Race Too Close to Call

Wednesday, October 08 2014

There’s no winner yet in Unalaska’s contested city council race.

Preliminary results have Yudelka Leclere with 212 votes, and incumbent Dennis Robinson with 190.

Leclere was at the polls Tuesday night to hear election workers read off those numbers. But she said she didn’t want to comment on the race until the votes are recounted on Friday.

Reached by phone on Wednesday, Robinson said the preliminary results came as a surprise.

"Well, 40 votes left outstanding, and me down 22, it doesn’t look good," he said. "It’s bittersweet in a way."

The last 40 votes will be counted by the canvass committee on Friday. After that, city council will meet to certify the election results.

Even if he loses the race, Robinson said he still wants to help address Unalaska’s housing shortage. That was a top issue during his brief campaign. It was the first time his seat on council had been challenged in four terms.

"Like I said, it’s new territory for me," he said. "I did not make a large enough effort on this, on my part."

The other five races on the municipal ballot were uncontested. Zoya Johnson received 279 votes to keep her city council seat, with 49 write-ins against her. For school board, Cathy Jordan, Fernando Barrera and Denise Rankin got more than 300 votes apiece.

Voter turnout was about 25 percent on Tuesday. That’s certainly higher than last year, when there was a write-in campaign for one council seat. It also exceeds the turnout in 2012, when all races were uncontested and about 6 percent of voters showed up at the polls.
